RV TRIP TO SEKIU 2006

Friday, December 8, 2006

We left out of Lacey with 39,454 miles on the odometer at about 11 AM in the morning.

We stopped to have the tires and airbags checked out and then went and got gas.  Now we are all set to head out.

The weather is over cast with high clouds and the temperature is about 44 degrees.  There is talk of rain off and on all weekend long.  But we plan on making this a pleasant trip no matter what the weather brings us.

So far it has been a nice drive through the trees and it has turned into a pretty day with spots of sunshine here and there.  But it sure is winter with all the trees asleep for a few months.  There are still patches of snow from the week before.  Passing by the trees you can see some of the old snags ten to twenty feet tall.  So neat to see.

We stopped at Kalaloch for lunch.  What a marvelous view of the ocean from their restaurant.  It would be so much fun to come back here with a group of people and rent some of the little cottages.  The ocean is a real treat to watch.  We sat there and watched the tide and waves bring in more and more downed trees.  Some must have been over 80-100 feet in length.  It was amazing how far up the creek the tide could push them.  What fun to watch.

Coming out of Kalaloch we saw a fair amount of snow along the road and we past a large herd of Elk.  All had lost their fall antlers.

Now a rushing waterfall with a beautiful rushing river blesses our view out of the side of the truck.  We are turning north on Hwy 113 to 112 and Clallam Bay.

We arrived at Clallam Bay about 3:15 and I went to visit with Derek for a few hours.   As we pulled into the facility we saw a small herd of black tailed deer eating grass.

Katie just loves to bark at these big animals, so we tried not to let her know that they were there. Smile! Monty went to find an RV site and check out the town.  I left Derek at about 6PM and came back to Sekiu with Monty.  We had dinner and played cards until bed time.  It was a very quiet but nice evening.

We slept in until 9AM.  I fixed breakfast and dinner, because I wouldn't be coming back from visiting Derek until later in the evening.  We left the RV site about 11:30AM to explore Neah Bay and drive around as far as we could to the point.  I wanted to see the northwestern most point of the United States, as I had already been to the southern most point in Florida.

We found a really neat campground called Hobeck which was just past Cape Flattery and Neah Bay.  This would be a great place for summer.  We could use the RV and/or the cabins and you can drop a small boat in the water.

We went on around the coast about another 7-8 miles.  We were going right along the ocean. What neat views.  We stopped for a bit to eat at Neah Bay and started back to Sekiu so I could go and see Derek.

I had a nice visit with Derek and Monty picked me up.  We came back, had dinner and played cards. Again, it was a very nice evening.

We took off heading for home about 10:30AM.  We had planned on going through Port Angeles via Hwy 12, which runs right along the coast.  It is amazing how many trees came down during this last winter storm.  All along the roadway it is littered with huge trees.

Every now and then we get a peek at the straits.  The clouds are high with a low line of light outlining Vancouver Island.  It really is a beautiful sight.

We have now seen at least 10 different cars topped with surfboards.  We just never knew that there were that many surfers out in this cold water.  But they seem to find good surf along the coast, even out past Cape Flattery.

We hit Port Angeles at noon and gassed up.  It was a nice drive, but didn’t see as much of the straits as I thought we would.  Heading homes from here.

We had lunch at the Oak Table in Sequim.   It is located on Washington and 3rd.   It’s a really good place for breakfast.  Just out of Sequim we saw a huge herd of Elk.  There were about 80 of them.  Just past Port Townsend we hit Hwy 101 south and headed back home along Hood Canal.  It’s a really pretty drive with lots of neat places to camp or stop all along the way.  We should be home soon.  We just saw a large flock of heron near the Hamma Hamma River.  Arrived home at 4PM.
